I kept hearing wonderful reviews about this book, but had dismissed it out of hand, thinking to myself "But I'm already happy. Aren't I?".
As luck would have it, I spied its colourful cover on a prominent display at our local library and on a whim decided to borrow. It is with a rueful smile on my face and a huge wedge of humble pie before me that I am posting about it now.
It is inspiration, delight and encouragement in a nutshell.
I simply adore it.
Here's the premise from The Book Depository:
Gretchen Rubin had an epiphany. One rainy afternoon on a city bus, she realized that she wasn't as happy as she could be. In danger of wasting her days - always yearning for something more, waiting for problems to miraculously solve themselves - she realized her life wasn't going to change unless she did something about it. On January 1, she embarked on her Happiness Project, and each month she pursued a different set of resolutions: to get more sleep, quit nagging her husband, sing in the morning to her two young daughters, start a blog, imitate a spiritual master, keep a one-sentence journal. She immersed herself in everything from classical philosophy to contemporary psychology to see what worked for her-and what didn't. Illuminating yet entertaining, profound yet compulsively readable, "The Happiness Project" is one of the most thoughtful and prescriptive works on happiness to have emerged from the recent explosion of interest in the subject. Filled with practical advice, sharp insight, charm, and humour, her story will inspire readers to navigate their own paths to happiness.
I know. It sounds excruciating doesnt it? Another contrived, woe-is-me, middle-aged angst journal of self-discovery....... I can assure you, it is none of those things.
Gretchen Rubin writes so warmly and candidly that you can't help but like her. She's not self-deprecating....she is aware of her strengths and is happy to acknowledge them. Which I found both refreshing and liberating. She works from the premise that she is already pretty happy and acknowledges that she has every reason to be. Her project is more about being as happy as possible, while being as grateful as possible and taking her husband and daughters along for the ride.
Run people, don't walk and get yourself a copy.
In fact, I'm going to give one away. That's how much I love this book.
Just leave a comment below and I'll do that random generator thingamie next Friday 13th {The Irony!}.
I love a giveaway. I tend to only do them with things I'm passionate about, so you know I mean business with this book.
Love you more than my new Goofball-proof acrylic tumblers,
Meredy xo

I'd love it. thanks.
yes pls! would love one!
Captain V always has a laugh at me when I declare that I've had an epiphany [perhaps because I may have more than my alloted share of these wonders] and so Gretchen's first line had me hooked.
It would be a wonderful gift of serendipity to receive this tome in our home - I promise if it wends its way to our place, I'll ensure that CV and I are in the hammock when I read aloud the first line to him.
Happy day!
I'm having a reaction like you did - it sounds a bit, well, twee. I would say 'Get over yourself, lady', but your review has me intrigued - so i'll give it a go.
There's only one thing I need this year to bring me exquisite happiness & that's to get my handicap under 30! With my dodgy knee & an arthroscopy on the horizon I don't like my chances. I've got MOTH reading Louise Hay at the moment, wonders never cease!!

Count me in too!

Well I am clearly very similar to you as I totally discounted that book too...since when is happiness a project? But after you're resounding review I will read it and be more open minded. xx
This sounds like a book one would keep.
I would love to win this

I'm in too! Sounds interesting. You might like One Thousand Gifts - also about finding joy in gratitude. 22 weeks on the New York Times best seller list, just got Christian book of the year award... very poetic and profound at the same time. I loved it!
I recently found her blog, loving it, but haven't picked up the book...winning would be awesome, then again, I too could borrow the copy from the library.
The more we all do our part, our very little part, the better the world will be.
Pick me, pick me! The book sounds awesome and I would love to read it!

Well, I had already read Simone's post before I came over to 'see' you ..... this sounds like my kind of book. Happiness is my word, so, although I probably don't need a lot more happiness, I think that it's well worth the read.....and, if you and Simone are recommending it then it's a must have !!
I love and NEED your recommendations so keep 'em coming.
