My love affair with kitchen open shelving continues unabated.
I think it's my attempt to walk on the domestic wild side.
{I don't get out much}
I like to think of it as my mark of defiance.
The sheer stubbornness of refusing to acknowledge that this shelf could very well end up going pear-shaped due to a variety of toddler-related circumstances at any moment. It's living on the edge, suburban style.
Anyhoo, it's here to stay.
Life's too short to be sensible all the time. Every now and then you've just got to do what you love.
Here it is again:

Surprise, surprise, it turns out I've amassed quite a collection of images in my picture file.
In trying to clear it out, I found this HUGE stash of the object of my affection.
This is therapy.
My thinking is that maybe if I post these pictures I'll feel at least I've done some form of open shelving decoration...even if just in Blogland.
What am I saying... JUST Blogland?? Where else could be better??!!

Where do I start? The sink? The colour of the cabinets? The high ceiling? The huge window? The taps?
And of course....the shelves.

Happy, happy, happy.
This just screams "Come over and play!"
It's gorgeous with the white china I think.
I wonder if the owner of this takes a tape measure to the supermarket to make sure the teabag boxes fit perfectly?

I know this is a little quirky, but I can't help but wishing this person lived next door and she was my very great friend.
You just know she has an awesome chocolate cake recipe.
{sigh}
Now we're talking.
I feel like bouncing up and down on the chair clapping my hands like a demented seal.
Do you think this is some one's actual kitchen?
Maybe the whole family took a pottery class and got a bit carried away.
Cool, retro coffee maker - check.
Gorgeous glass cake cloche - check.
Artisan bread - check.
Perfection - check.

I love this...but I'm not so sure about the ENORMOUS grilled cheese sandwich toaster next to the stove.

I was drawn to this because of the shelving.
I stayed because of the cake boxes and bowl of icing.

Such an inviting aspect.

Those stools look heinously uncomfortable, obviously they don't like guests to stay too long at the table, but it does look very "holiday cottage" cute.

If I lived here, I would insist on always wearing a frilly apron and perhaps some lovely red ballet flats.

If only my children wouldn't be tempted to grab these by the handful to use as instruments of torture, I would display my cutlery like this all the time.
Unfortunately, the temptation would be far too great.
{Hint: there are three cake stands}
I could really use one of those at about 6:30 every evening.
It's who sits around your table and the memories you create as you break bread together.
Thanks for all your wonderful comments and hilarious insights this week.
You guys are the best.
Meredy xo.

I love the ladder shelves, but Ginny would be climbing those things quicker that you can say, "YOU'LL BREAK YOUR NECK!"
ReplyDeleteThat kitchen with the swing is the room of my DREAMS. Who thinks of that? A genius, that's who.
I love them ALL! Such gorgeousness. And yeah, the one with the KitchenAid mixer up high? SHUH. That would never work for me. I use mine all the time! =-D
ReplyDeleteI love open shelving! We have our mugs/cups on an open shelve, but hopefully when we renovate our kitchen we might have more. Beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteLove the pics and LOVE the comments hahaha made me laugh out loud .. demented seal haha HILARIOUS :-) Thanks for bringing some laughter into my day (and some jealousy too!) ;-)
ReplyDeleteMeredy, you have resolved one of the more significant renovation arguments taking place in our house at the moment!!! Yes, I owe you a big favour now! After viewing the images, Ross has finally agreed to let me do some open shelving in the kitchen!!! Hurray!!! Thank you! xx
ReplyDeleteYou had me at the second picture...love that space and I too adore open shelving in a kitchen. Gorgeous pictures.
ReplyDeleteMeredy, my heart is thumping, I have some serious shelving love going on here. A sense of order warms the heart and makes me feel like a new woman. You are right though... It comes down to who is sitting around the table... but how nice to glance your eye around at those shelves at the same time :)
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Meredy!!!

Sigh... loving those photos!
ReplyDeletei like them all. beautifully organized. lovely greetings from Bulgaria
ReplyDeleteMy first visit. I know this open shelves thing is really big, every young person speaks of it. My concern is DUST. How can you keep up with it all. I like the glass doors. I have to say it looks great.
ReplyDeleteyvonne
Ps I just put you on my side bar
After YEARS of saying how much I'd like some open shelves in our kitchen, my lovely hubby today has got started! There will be 3 shelves, with the top one being a little longer than the others, reaching along and over the top of the door! I'm planning on having my baking bowls, some cute tin boxes from Harrods (teabags) perhaps a plant, a lamp, and other kitcheny stuff on them!!!
ReplyDeleteAll the images you posted are wonderful in every way! I especially like the blackboard walls in between the shelving. I never used to like open shelving but it certainly is growing on me more and more!!
ReplyDeleteMy little brother liked to chase me around with a knife when we were home alone together. It's a terrifying thing even when you know that he doesn't actually plan to hurt you. I guess it's a good idea to keep those utensils out of reach... if that's possible.
ReplyDeleteAlso, this is a great collection of different open shelving styles and I loved your commentary. What are the odds I would have noticed the pink mixer on my own? Not good at all.
